Tomorrow marks one year since Maxwell's cleft lip surgery.
It has been a long, hard year. With many ups and downs. And Frustrations and challenges.
We still struggle with certain things on a daily basis.
And there are still several things we are trying to solve regarding his health.
We are still learning how to help him be happy and comfortable.
Last week, the kids and I were at the swimming pool, when two little girls started talking to us.
One was ten and the other was seven. The older girl asked about his lip, and why it curled up.
I explained to her that he had a cleft lip as a baby and had surgery to fix it.
They asked what a cleft lip was, and when I explained it, the younger girl replied, "ewe".
It broke my heart a little. But at the same time, I knew she didn't quite understand.
Kids will be kids, and part of that is being honest. We hope to instill confidence in Maxwell.
And we hope to teach him that his scar and lip curl just add character. That they make him special.
